Indian telly world is changing for the better

Everest

Ashutosh Gowariker’s Everest

Creativity, they say knows no bounds. Some like to start big, some begin with baby steps and then go on to set standards of their own! Now days, television turn to happyexperimenting ground for many a director, who have already made it big in bollywood. Amongst them, one more name has added. That is Ashutosh Gowariker. Perhaps, to say that these directors have migrated would not be entirely true, these men have chosen to explore both formats simultaneously.

Star Plus announces its new show Everest produced by one of the eminent directors Ashutosh Gowarikar who has mastered in making outstanding movies like Lagaan, Jodha Akbar, Swades and many more. There is a popular television series ‘Jodha Akbar‘ inspired by the movie. This show is going to establish a new trend in the TV industry.

Elaborating little on the story line, Everest depicts the story of a girl who aspires and dreams to summit the greatest and the highest mountain of the world which is Mt Everest. She takes an oath to reach at the peak of Mount Everest when she discovers that she is an unwanted child and her father used to dislike her. So to impress her father and make a place in his heart she takes up the challenge to climb Mt Everest.

The crew consists of well-known people from the industry. Glenn Baretto and Ankush Mohla who have directed many shows and films are the directors of the show. Mahesh Aney, a National Award winner is the director of photography.

Music maestro A.R. Rahman, who acted in TV show “Wonder Balloon” in 1980, is back on television, but this time as a composer for the show. He says in the last 34 years, the medium has become very big.

The current state of the TV industry in the country provides ample room for various genres of fiction and non-fiction content but producers and directors didn’t invest time and money in innovative projects until the Anil Kapoor’s ‘24’.

Although the shows like ‘24’ and Yudh don’t high on TRP chart, the shows gave a new cinematic experience to the audience. Things have dumbed down to the extent that the idiot box is visibly dominated by unending soap sagas — of long-winding titles, household politics, women dressed like Diwali decoration. Through television, these directors could reach to larger audience.

Touted to be the costliest serial on Indian television at Rs 3 crore an episode, Sony Entertainment Television (SET)’s Yudh has failed to make the impact on the small screen as expected. The show, which marks Bollywood heavyweight Amitabh Bachchan’s acting debut on the small screen, definitely made an attempt to change the scenario of Indian small screen.

The show knocks the bottom out of the Indian home entertainment racket to show us a world of classy production-values and mature performances  which was unknown to Indian television.

Anil Kapoor’s 24 and Amitabh Bachchan’s Yudh provide a much-needed breakthrough.
